Facts and Myths about homeopathy & FAQs "Homeopathy .... cures a larger percentage of cases than any other method of treatment and is beyond doubt safer and more economical and is the most complete medical science." (Mahatama Gandhi) Facts & Myths Myth: Homeopathy is slow acting. False. In fact homeopathy in many cases can act even faster than conventional medicine. Being a metaphysical entity, it does not have the limitation of material barriers. In fact the true power & speed of homeopathic medicines can be seen in the emergency room situation when treating conditions such as haemorrhages and concussion. What can homeopathy treat Myth: Homeopathy is only useful in chronic conditions and not in acute conditions. False. In fact more than 40% of cases that we attend to at the clinic are acute in nature, ranging from fevers & otitis media to sinusitis & diarrhoea. One reason for this misconception is that people often turn to homeopathic medicine when all else has failed. After years of conventional allopathic treatment, naturally the condition becomes chronic and will naturally take longer to treat. Myth: Homeopathy works due to a placebo effect. False. In fact there is ample clinical evidence all over the world, in fact millions of cases showing the efficacy of homeopathic medicine. The efficacy of homeopathic medicines in infants, children and animals is evidence of this. Myth: Homeopathic medicines have not been through clinical trials. False. In fact homeopathic medicines have been tested on humans in clinical trials known in homeopathy as Provings. The symptoms produced are extensively documented in volumes and volumes of texts called materia medicas. Myth: Homeopathy provides a ‘magic cure’ and can cure any disease under the sun. False. Like any other system of medicine, homeopathy it has its own limitations. Frequently asked questions What happens in the consultation? If you have a chronic or frequently occurring complaint, the first consultation may take up to an hour & a half. During this initial consultation, the practitioner will attempt to extract a complete mental, general and physical picture of your condition, including many questions about yourself, your lifestyle, personal and family medical histories. This is important since it will enable the practitioner to understand your baseline constitution from which future acute and chronic prescriptions can be determined more rapidly and efficiently. Follow-up consultations are of much shorter duration, up to 30 minutes, and will enable the assessment of how you have responded to the medicine. If, however you have an acute condition, then this can be dealt with far more rapidly, even over the telephone or the e-mail. What happens after the consultation? The practitioner will then analyse the information, and will prescribe a homoeopathic medicine, which will be tailored to your individual case. This may be prescribed at the clinic on the same day or posted to you to take at a later date. At this point the practitioner may ask you to call in on the homoeopathic phone line at a later date, to discuss briefly how you are responding to the treatment. The follow-up consultatation will usually be booked four to six weeks after the initial consultation. What to expect from treatment? Patients often feel a sense of well being and optimism after taking the medicine. Others may feel very tired at first then improve gradually. Occasionally, there may be a temporary worsening of symptoms, or a return of old symptoms, all of which are seen as positive reactions to the medicine. These symptoms will pass and must not be treated, as they constitute an important part of the healing process. It is in fact a good idea to make a note of any signs and symptoms that arise between consultations so that these can be considered. If the response to your treatment concerns you, contact your practitioner as soon as possible to allow an assessment of the progress of treatment. These symptoms must not be treated except under the strict supervision of your practitioner. It is important to remember that you will be on constitutional treatment and therefore the use of conventional medicines such as antibiotics and steroids may have a negative effect towards your overall treatment therefore should be discussed with your practitioner before taking such, since more than likely, your symptoms will be treatable homoeopathically, without disruption of your constitutional treatment and with the advantage of supervision. How long does treatment take? This very much depends on the presenting condition. In emergency conditions, response can be very rapid and dramatic indeed as can be the case in the treatment of acute illnesses, often more rapid than with the use of orthodox conventional medicine. In chronic conditions, which may have been present for several years and cannot of course disappear overnight, the response depends on how well the individual responds to the prescription. Generally, as a rule, you may expect deepseated chronic conditions to take a little longer, the number of consultations or months required being equal to the years suffered from the disease is a crude indication, but improvement is usually seen fairly quickly. | |
