What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a complete and holistic system of medicine that is entirely natural. It is complete because it can be applied to any condition or disease and natural because it works by stimulating the body itself to cure. It is holistic because it treats the person as a whole, not treating mental, emotional and physical symptoms separately but regarding them as intimately connected since they are all aspects of the patient’s suffering.

Although the principle of this system of medicine was described by Hippocrates (the father of modern medicine) 2500 years ago, who stated that disease could be treated by either ‘similars’ (as in homeopathy), or ‘opposites’ (as in orthodox medicine), homeopathy as it is practised today, evolved 200 years ago under the great German physician and scholar Dr Samuel Hahnemann, who was appalled by existing medical practises, which he thought did more harm than good. He sought a system of medicine which would be safe, gentle and
effective. It is a system of medicine which is gaining more and more popularity due to its effectiveness and has in fact been used by the Royal Family for generations.

How does homeopathy work?

The word ‘homeopathy’ is derived from the Greek word ‘Homoios’ meaning similar and ‘Pathos’ meaning disease, therefore ‘similar suffering’. This forms the basis of one of the basic principles in homeopathy, which is ‘like cures like’. This is based on the philosophy that a substance that can produce symptoms in a healthy individual can cure those symptoms in a sick individual.

When the body’s equilibrium is disturbed, it starts to produce symptoms, which are seen in homeopathy as a useful sign, enabling the practitioner to assess them and prescribe a homeopathic medicine. Symptoms are treated by giving the homeopathic medicine in minute doses, which stimulates the body to harness its own healing power and re-establish equilibrium, facilitating cure rapidly, gently and permanently. The aim is to get the individual to an optimum level of health so that treatment is only required infrequently.

Who can use homeopathy?

This is a completely natural system of medicine, which can be used for everyone, from new born infants to the elderly. It is especially useful in treating conditions in infants, children, the elderly, during & after pregnacy, and in weak fragile patients suffering from concurrent illnesses. It is a system of medicine which is used world wide, especially in countries like India, where for certain sectors of the population it is the only accessible
system of medicine for the treatment of a wide range of pathologies, in hospitals which exclusively use homeopathic medicine as the sole form of treatment, including the treatment of some diseases which are now extinct in the developed western world.

What can be treated?

Homeopathy being a complete system of medicine can treat a wide range of conditions, both acute and chronic. Acute illnesses are those that come up suddenly and intensely such as:
Homeopathy #01

Chronic conditions are those that have developed over a longer period of time and are of longer standing. Some examples include:

Homeopathy #02

The remarkable power of homeopathic medicines is apparent when these medicines are employed for use in accident and emergency situations, for example:

  • Bites and stings
  • Bruises and Blunt trauma
  • Concussion
  • Cuts
  • Fractures
  • Haemorrhages
  • Nose bleeds
  • Shock
  • Sprains and Strains
  • Sunstroke
  • Surgical trauma

Remember homeopathy can be used to treat any condition, even problems that have no clear diagnosis, because it treats the individual rather than the disease.

How does homoeopathy differ from conventional medicine?

Homoeopathy is a system of medicine, which recognises the uniqueness of individuals, consequently two individuals can have the ‘flu’ but can present with totally different symptoms. One may present with a headache, blocked sinuses and fever while the other with a sore throat, cough and aching bones. In conventional orthodox medicine all conditions are classified and treated according to the disease state and the treatment in both cases would
be the same, since in conventional medicine the trend is to generalise. In homoeopathy, the ‘dis-ease’ suffered by each patient will be considered individually and each will receive a prescription tailored to their specific symptom complex, since the prescription is individualised. The results are often remarkable and many times rapid, gentle and permanent.

    Homeopathic medicines

There are more than 3000 remedies derived from several sources including minerals (e.g.salts, metal ions), plants (e.g. roots, leaves, flowers) and animals (e.g. venoms, poisons, extracts). A sophisticated process of ‘dilution’ and ‘succusion’ is used to develop the healing properties inherent in these sources.

You will be prescribed a homoeopathic medicine usually in the form of pills, powders, tablets or liquids, which are easy to take and have a pleasant taste. They are non-toxic and non-habit forming.

    Taking homeopathic medicines

Homeopathic medicines are delicate and need careful handling, they should not be hand handled. Tip one pill/tablet onto the lid of the bottle and place directly under the tongue. If a liquid dosage form is given, a separate instruction sheet will be provided. Homeopathic medicines should not be taken 30 minutes either side of eating/ drinking, smoking, or brushing teeth. The doses should not be repeated unless under the strict instruction of your practitioner, since this can have a derogatory effect on your treatment and make analysis of the reaction to the medicine difficult.

Homeopathic medicines should be stored in a cool, dry, dark environment, away from strong smelling substances. When travelling, they should not be exposed to x-rays, as this may deactivate their properties.

    Antidotes

Certain substances are known to antidote homeopathic medicines, and it is advisable to avoid these while on homeopathic treatment e.g. coffee (incl. decaffeinated), mint/peppermint (incl. toothpaste, alternatives are available), camphor, menthol & eucalyptus (often found in cold rubs and vapour rubs), tea tree, recreational drugs, conventional drugs (incl. over-the-counter drugs), dental work (inform your practitioner) and other therapies (e.g. acupuncture, aromatherapy, herbal medicine and other energy medicines should be avoided while on homoeopathic treatment as they may confuse the picture).

    Advantages of Homeopathic medicine

  • Homeopathic medicines encourage your own body to cure itself naturally.
  • Homeopathy treats all symptoms: mental emotional, general and physical.
  • Homeopathy treats the person and not just the disease.
  • Homeopathy can treat difficult conditions without a definitive diagnosis.
  • Homeopathy can be used for maintenance of health, by taking constitutional treatment.
  • Homeopathic medicines are safe, gentle and without side effects when taken under the directions of a qualified practitioner.
  • They are safe and gentle without the risk of side effects during pregnancy, in infants, children and elderly when used under the supervision of a qualified practitioner.
  • They are easy to take and pleasant to taste.
  • They are not tested on animals.

  • Homeopathy in pregnancy

Homeopathic treatment during pregnancy can be ideal since it offers the advantage of being gentle and yet highly effective. The major advantage over orthodox conventional medicine is that treatment is totally free of side effects when used under the supervision of a qualified practitioner. The changing mental and physical state of the expectant mother can give rise to several minor health problems, which can cause much discomfort. Homeopathy
can be used in the treatment of these conditions, some examples of which are:

    Homeopathy #03
  • Backache
  • Constipation
  • Cramp
  • Cystitis
  • Diarrhoea
  • Emotional distress
  • Fatigue
  • Indigestion/Heartburn
  • Morning sickness
  • Thrush
  • Uterine haemorrhage
  • Urinary problems
  • Varicose veins

Homeopathy can also be employed in the treatment of more serious conditions such as oedema, raised blood pressure and other serious conditions that may have arisen during pregnancy. Treatment of the expectant mother to maintain optimum health during pregnancy facilitates an environment in which the baby can thrive, especially at a time when most conventional medicines are contraindicated due to concerns of adverse effects on the foetus.

    Homeopathy in childbirth

The use of homeopathic medicine during labour (preferably during pregnancy too) is an excellent natural option. Many women opt for natural systems to help them through this difficult time in preference to or even along side conventional options. Homeopathy can be used to deal with many potential problems that may arise during labour including:

  • Emotional distress
  • Failure to progress
  • Fear
  • Pain relief

  • Homeopathy #04Homeopathy after childbirth

After birth, homeopathic medicine can be used to speed up healing of the mother and the child, allowing the whole experience to be enjoyed more. Homeopathic philosophy encourages and recognises that breast-feeding gives the baby a good start in life. Problems associated with breast-feeding such as mastitis, slow milk supply or sore nipples can be helped with homeopathy. Babies respond beautifully to homeopathic medicines and early problems of infancy such as colic, teething and nappy rash, as well as other more serious problems, which too can be helped.

  • Neonatal respiratory difficulties
  • Post partum haemorrhage
  • Retained placenta

    Homeopathy in childhood diseases

“Homeopathic care is a great benefit for the healthy development of children. In my 30 years of practice I have seen children who were treated homeopathically for a long period of time, and who have developed and become healthier than their siblings, who did not receive homeopathic treatment. I continually observe, that children who have been treated well with homeopathic medicines, usually exceed in height their parents and siblings, who have not been similarly treated. This simple observation shows how deeply homeopathy can affect the body, most probably reaching to the very genetic level of the body.”
(George Vitholkas – Professor at Kiev Medical Acadamy & Alternative Nobel prize winner 1996)

As well as being a gentle and effective system of medicine for the treatment of many common ailments in children, homeopathic medicine facilitates the constitutional treatment of children. This means that the child is treated holistically, treating mental/emotional, general and physical symptoms, and not just dealing with symptoms as if they are part of different mechanical systems. The constitutional treatment of children has the overwhelming advantage of reducing a child’s susceptibilities or tendencies to disease by conditioning their immune systems, and therefore allowing the child to deal with stresses and strains, that would otherwise bring about illness. Avoiding these stresses and strains is what we term primary prevention in health care; this is what helps to keep the child healthy. Some examples of childhood conditions that can be treated with homeopathy include:

  • Homeopathy #05
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Behavioural problems
  • Chicken pox
  • Constipation
  • Croup
  • Diarrhoea
  • Ear infections/Glue ear
  • Eating disorders
  • Eczema
  • Eye disorders
  • Fears/ Fright
  • Fevers
  • Genital tract infections
  • Infant colic
  • Milk intolerance
  • Neonatal jaundice
  • Oral and Rectal thrush
  • Poor growth and weight loss
  • Sleeplessness
  • Teething problems
  • Urinary problems
  • Vomiting

    Homeopathy and the menopause

The menopause is an important time of transitional mental and physical change, and homeopathic treatment can offer an excellent alternative to hormone replacement therapy(HRT).

Some women find that HRT agrees with them, however many find it does not. HRT attempts to delay the menopause by ‘fooling’ the body to think it is still fertile, going against the rhythms of nature. In addition, the side effects of treatment are well known, including the increased risk of raised blood pressure, thrombosis, strokes, migraines, breast cancer and cervical cancer. Therefore it should be used where benefit outweigh the risks.

Homeopathic treatment may give a smooth passage through this transition by treating the constitution, maintaining a healthy mental, emotional and physical balance. Restoring a healthy balance, allows the enjoyment of the next phase of life with vitality, energy and confidence.
